Revista electrónica interuniversitaria de formación del profesorado

2016

Literacy in the cooperative sector evaluated through the reserve for cooperative education and training

2018

This study aims to evaluate the degree of legal-accounting literacy in cooperatives, having as an indicator the reserve for cooperative education and training, since this reserve is exclusive to the legal regime of cooperatives and which, due to its very specific purposes, presented itself as a mechanism that seeks to prevent or eliminate possible phenomena of illiteracy. This reserve ? which implements the cooperative principle of education, training and information ? addresses members, leaders and workers and aims to contribute to the development of the cooperative, by allowing the education of cooperators, an active membership, the professionalization of the employees and members of the …

2019

Smallholder farmers in developing regions like sub-Saharan Africa still grapple with development challenges like poverty, illiteracy, food insecurity, poor infrastructures like roads and limited access to learning opportunities. Moreover, amidst all these challenges, these possess mobile phones as they continuously engage in diverse livelihood activities. Echoed in previous research, mobile phones are the most diffused technologies available in many rural communities. Yet, most mobile technological interventions are urban-based projects neglecting rural locales in harnessing mobile phone usage. More so, mobile for development research uses quantitative methods which limits proper interrogat…

On Migration and Illiteracy—Dealing With Texts in L2 Italian Initial-Literacy Classes

2019

Acquiring the language spoken in the host country is crucial for social inclusion of migrants. From this perspective, illiteracy represents a social problem since it has repercussions on second-language acquisition/learning process. In order to investigate the role of illiteracy in L2 Italian acquisition, the paper aims at analyzing the oral productions of L2 Italian learners with equal L1 but a different level of education, i.e., low educated vs. non-educated. The learners’ productions are collected through semi-structured video interviews. From the perspective of the conversational analysis, the interviews are transcribed and studied taking into account also non-verbal aspects of the oral…

Motivation and Consequences of Internet and Mobile Phone Usage among the Urban Poor in Kampala, Uganda

2015

The Internet and mobile phones are rapidly diffusing throughout communities, and it is important to understand what people are actually doing with their access to these technologies. This study seeks to improve our understanding of the motivational factors and social and economic consequences of such use among the urban poor, which is examined through the Diffusion of Innovations Theory (DoI) and the Capability Approach (CA). The combined theoretical perspective was introduced to explore findings of an explorative case study conducted among the urban poor in Kampala, Uganda, where Internet access was found to be low due to high illiteracy and associated costs. On the other hand, mobile phon…

On the social meanings inherent in literacy campaigns

1990

The Role of ICT Actors and Networks in Development: The Case Study of a Wireless Project in Nepal

2011

The role of ICT actors in the formation and extension of ICT4D projects is important. The actors through their extended network and aligned interest can enhance the effectiveness of the project which in turn enables socioeconomic development opportunities. However, few studies have been conducted to understand the role of these central players. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to address this knowledge gap by conducting a qualitative case study in the Myagdi district in the mountain region of Nepal. In this study we explored the Nepal Wireless Networking Project (NWNP) and examined how an activist started it from one mountain village and gradually extended across more than 150 vil…

Two stories, one fate: age-heaping and literacy in Spain, 1877-1930

2021

This study looks at human capital in Spain during the early stages of modern economic growth. In order to do so, we have assembled a new dataset on ageheaping and literacy in Spain for both men and women between 1877 and 1930 based on six population censuses with information for 49 provinces. Our results show that age-heaping was less prevalent during the second half of the 19th century than previously thought and did not decrease until the early twentieth century. By contrast, literacy increased throughout the whole period. Interestingly, age-heaping and illiteracy rates depict similar spatial patterns which confirm the stark differences in human capital within Spain. Lastly, we raise crit…

Mass education or a minority well educated elite in the process of growth: The case of India

2013

Abstract This paper analyzes whether mass education is more growth enhancing in developing countries than having a minority well educated elite. Using Indian Census data as a benchmark and enrollment rates at different levels of education, we compute annual attainment levels for a panel of 16 Indian states from 1961 to 2001. Results indicate that if the reduction in illiteracy stops at the primary level of education, it is not worthwhile for growth. Instead, the findings reveal a strong and significant effect on growth of a greater share of population completing tertiary education. The economic impact is also found to be large: a one percent change in tertiary education has the same effect …
